INTRODUCTION
Placement testing is an about the placement tests that college and
universities use to assess college readiness and place students into their
initial classes. Since most two year colleges have open, non-competitive
admissions policies, many students are admitted event though they do not have
college-level academic qualification. Tests primarily assess abilities in
English, Mathematics and reading in other disciplines such as foreign
languages, Science, Computer internet and Health.
Placement testing can also serve a gate keeper function, keeping,
academically challenged students from progressing into college programs,
particularly in competitive admissions.
GATE
The Graduate Aptitude Test in
Engineering is an all India level examination that primarily tests the
comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering
and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven
Indian Institute of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinates Board GATE,
Department of Higher Educationand Ministry of Human Resources Development.
The GATE score of a
candidate reflects the relative performance level of a candidate. The score is
used for admission to various post graduate education programs. Recently GATE
scores are also being used by several Indian public sector undertakings for
recruiting graduate Engineers in entry level positions. It is one of toughest
and most competitive examinations in India.
Financial Assistance in Post Graduate Programs
A valid GATE score is essential
for obtaining financial assistance during Master’s Programs. Depending upon the
norms adopted by a specific institution or department of the institute, a
candidate may be admitted directly into a course based on his performance to
available the financial assistance (Scholarship) to a program in these
institutes by a procedure that could vary from institute to institute.
Eligibility to Take
GATE
Candidates in the fourth or
higher year of five year integrated master’s degree programs or dual degree
programs in engineering or technology.
GATE Discipline and
Structure
At present
GATE is conducted in 22 disciplines. A candidate can select any one of these.
Each subject’s test contains ten questions that test the “general aptitude”
apart from the core subjects of the disciplines.
Duration and Examination Type
The examination is of three hours durations and contains a
total 65 questions worth a maximum 100 mark.From 2014 onward the examination
for all the paper is carried out in online computer based test.
Result and Test Score
GATE results are usually
declared about one month after the examination is over. The result show the
total marks scored by a candidate, the GATE score, the all India rank and the
cut off marks for various categories in the candidate’s paper.
Year and Organizing
Institute
Each year’s GATE is organized by any one of eight institutes IISc and
IITs. The overall co-ordination and responsibility of conducting GATE lies with
this institute, which is designated as the organizing institute for GATE of
that year.
GRE
The Graduate Record Examination
is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for most graduate
schools in the United States created and administered by educational testing service in 1949, the
exam aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical
writing and critical thinking skills. That have been acquired over a long
period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE
general test is offered as a Computer Based Exam administered at pro metric testing
centers.
In the graduates school
admissions process, the level of emphasis that is placed upon GRE scores varies
widely between schools
and
between departments within schools. The importance of a GRE score can range
from being a more admission formality to an important selection factor.
STRUCTURE
The structure of the computer
based GRE revised general test contain six sections. The first section is
always the analytical writing section involving separately timed issue and
argument tasks. The next five sections consists of two quantitative reasoning
two verbal reasoning sections and either an experimental or research sections.
These five sections may occur in any order. GRE revised general test is a
multistage test, where the examinee’s
performance on earlier section determines the difficulty of subsequent
sections.
The paper
based GRE general test consists of six section and is only available in areas.
Where computer based testing is unavailable. The analytical writing is split up
into two sections, one section for each issue and argument task. The next four
section consists of two verbal and two quantitative sections in varying order.
There is no experimental section on the paper based test.
Verbal Section
The computer based verbal
sections assess reading comprehension, critical reasoning and vocabulary usage.
The verbal test is scored on a scale of 130-170 in 1-point increments. In a
typical examination each verbal sections consist of twenty questions to be
completed in thirty minutes.
Quantitative
Section
The computer based quantitative
section assess basic high school level Mathematical knowledge and reasoning
skills. The quantitative test is scored on a scale of 130-170 1-point
increments. In a typical examination each quantitative section consist of
twenty questions to be completed in thirty five minutes.
Analytical Writing
Section
The Analytical Writing Section
consists of two different essays, an “issue task” and an “argument task”. The
writing section is graded on scale of 0-6, in half point increments. The essays
are written on a computer using a word processing program specifically designed
by ETs.
ISSUE TASK
The test taker is given 30
minutes to write an essay about selected topic. Issue topics are selected from
a pool of questions, which the GRE program has published in it’s entirely.
ARGUMENT TASK
The task taker will be given an
argument that is series of facts and considerations leading to a conclusion and
will be asked to write an essay that critiques the argument.
Experimental
section
Which can be either a verbal,
quantitative contains new questions ETs is considering for future use. Although
the experimental section does not count towards the test-taker’sscore, it is
unidentified and appears identical to scored sections.
Scoring
An examinee can miss one or
more questions on a multiple – choice section and still receive a perfect score
of 170. Likewise even if no question is answered correctly, 130 are the lowest
possible score.
Use in Admissions
Many graduate schools in the
United States require GRE results as part of the admissions process. The GRE is
a standardized test intended to measure the abilities of all graduate in task
of general academic nature, regardless of their field of specialization.
Intel Science
Program
The
Intel Science Talent search, a program of society for science and the public,
is the nations and most prestigious pre-college science competition. It honors
exceptional high school seniors for their scientific research and their
potential as future leaders in the scientific community.
Each year, approximately 1800 students attending American high schools
enter the competition in the hope of winning awards .The applicant pool is
first narrowed to three hundred semifinalists, who along with their schools
receive cash prizes. To attend a week- long celebration of science and complete
for top honors such as:
Ø THE
BASIC RESEARCH MEDAL
Ø THE
GLOBAL GOOD MEDAL
Ø THE
INNOVATION MEDAL
Inspiring
Innovation
Since 1998,Intel has sponsored this venerated competition. Now in its 74th
year, the Intel Science Talent search continues to inspire innovation in
Science, Technology, Engineering and mathematics and to recognize notable achievements
by the next generation of scientific leaders.
CONCLUSION
vPlacement
tests are designed to help you succeed in school. Once you identify your
academic strengths and weakness.
vPlacement
tests are computerized and the results are made available immediately at the
conclusion of each test.
